First Biotech is an emerging company, located in South East Ohio. With a professional team of experts in management, marketing and biotechnology the company is a growing force in the innovative space of biotechnology.
First Biotech produces laboratory reagents for research in biotechnology. The company is commercializing a revolutionary new approach to site-directed mutagenesis that simplifies current site-directed mutagenesis techniques and expands its application. The First Biotech process is embodied in a set of proprietary reagents that are commercialized as a kit. The kit expands the users’ capabilities; tripling the accessible market by removing plasmid size limitations and, at the same time, increasing speed and efficiency. First Biotech has closed on pre-seed funding from TechGrowth Ohio, established manufacturing at the Ohio University Innovation Center, and is initiating marketing and sales efforts.

Louay Hallak, PhD., Founder & President
Louay Hallak, PhD. Dr. Hallak is the inventor of the core concept of UnRestricted Mutagenesis and Cloning (URMAC) technology for DNA mutagenesis. Along with Professor Mark Peeples of Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) in Columbus, OH, he further invented a series of URMAC variations that ultimately led him to establish First Biotech Company and incorporate it in the State of Ohio in 2009. With support and co-investment funds from TechGrowth and Southern Ohio Creates Companies, he established a biotechnology manufacturing facility in Athens, Ohio. He received his doctoral degree from Rush University in Chicago and served as a Research Fellow in the Department of Molecular Medicine at the Mayo Clinic Rochester, before taking a Senior Research Scientist position at the Center for Vaccines and Immunity, NCH. Upon founding First Biotech, he dedicated his full time to manage the early stage development of the company in which he currently serves as the president and chief technology officer. Dr. Hallak has 20 years of overlapping experience in molecular biology, virology, gene therapy, and business management.
Michael Tehan, B.S., Chief Financial Officer
Michael Tehan, B.S. Mr. Tehan a Manager with The Lachey Company is an Executive in Residence at TechGROWTH Ohio, an Ohio Third Frontier-funded venture-development organization housed at Ohio University’s Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs in Athens, Ohio. Prior to joining The Lachey Company he was at Ernst & Young working within the audit and attestation practice. After Ernst & Young he worked within the CFO services/M&A practice of a Dayton, Ohio based accounting firm where he managed over 15 individual CFO clients along with helping grow the Columbus office. Mr. Tehan holds a B.S. degree in Accounting from Ohio Northern University. The Lachey Company is business advisory firm that teams with clients to add to their bottom line. The Lachey Company has extensive experience working with entrepreneurial clients and they provide critical early stage financial and tax advice to help those clients succeed.
John Glazer, PhD ABD., Advisor
John Glazer, PhD ABD. John Glazer currently serves as the Director of TechGROWTH Ohio, an Ohio Third Frontier-funded venture-development organization housed at Ohio University’s Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs in Athens, Ohio. TechGROWTH helps early-stage technology companies acquire resources to accelerate commercialization. Prior to joining TechGROWTH in 2008, John served as CEO of Little Professor Book Centers, a successful bookstore chain and the largest organization of independent bookstores in the U.S. John also founded several other startup companies and organized a number of technology-based economic development enterprises in the U.S. and internationally. He has an ABD PhD and Master’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Michigan.
Keith Moore, BBA, Marketing Consultant
Keith Moore, BBA Keith Moore has over 25 years of Sales and Marketing experience in the research tools industry. Previous positions include Vice President of Sales and Distribution – BD Biosciences Discovery Labware; Vice President Sales and Marketing – BD Biosciences Discovery Labware; Vice President Sales and Service - BD Biosciences; and Sales and Marketing Manager - BD Biosciences Europe based in Meylan France. Keith has extensive experience in various Worldwide Business, Product Development, and Sales and Marketing Leadership Teams – including due diligence and integrations for two acquisitions. Keith’s consulting experience began as an acquisition consultant at Life Technologies Corporation. Keith graduated from Ohio University with a BBA in Marketing, and has had Executive Education experiences through Rutgers University, MIT, Harvard University, INSEAD, and Columbia University.
Jeffrey Wiseman, PhD., Business Adviser and a BOD Member
Jeffrey Wiseman, PhD. Dr. Wiseman is Executive in Residence at the Edison Biotechnology Institute, where he is responsible for advancing life sciences technologies in southeastern Ohio. Dr. Wiseman has 30 years of experience in drug discovery research in the pharmaceutical industry. Prior to joining Ohio University, he was Chief Technology Officer at the biotechnology company, Locus Pharmaceuticals, where he participated in raising $32 MM in financing and established research collaborations valued at $60 MM. Before Locus, Dr. Wiseman led drug discovery divisions in biochemistry, informatics, and the therapeutic area for Inflammatory Diseases at GlaxoSmithKline. In 1994, Dr. Wiseman created the discipline of chemical informatics and the next year was appointed to Glaxo’s worldwide Research Executive council. Dr. Wiseman holds a B.S. degree, summa cum laude, in chemistry from Ohio University and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Harvard University, with postdoctoral training in Biochemistry at Stanford and Brandeis.
